Childbirth and Family Classes 2010
Las Colinas Medical Center offers a variety of family education classes to help expectant parents prepare for an exceptional birth. Studies show that parents who participate in the decisions surrounding the birth of their baby are more satisfied with the birth experience and begin their new life more confidently. Our childbirth classes will give parents-to-be the opportunity to learn about the process of birth, the resources available to manage the challenges of labor and a fun and interactive way to prepare for the birth of their baby.

If you enroll in 4 or more classes, including a childbirth class, you can receive a special price of $150 total. ALL class dates are subject to change.

Safe Sitter (ages 11-14)
6 1/2 hours, $45
Safe Sitter Basic® teaches adolescent babysitters the fundamentals of babysitting, and babysitting as a business. It teaches these adolescents how to handle crises such as choking rescue techniques, undesirable behavior and how to calmly handle emergency situations. It also educates on how to nurture and guide a young child. In short, Safe Sitter Basic® babysitters help children stay safe and sound while their parents are away! In the process, these 11-to 13-year-olds emerge as more confident, responsible and compassionate teens and adults. Students will need to bring a healthy sack lunch, drinks will be provided.

2 hours, $30
If you are anticipating a Cesarean birth, this class will prepare you for the experience from pre-admission through your recovery at home. We’ll cover in detail what to expect during surgery and throughout your hospital stay, how your partner can help, and tips for a smooth recovery while caring for a newborn. The class includes a Maternity Tour

10 hours, $85
This class is ideal for expectant parents who want an interactive, comprehensive childbirth class. Topics include third trimester pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum. Common hospital routines, medications and labor management are discussed in depth. This full-length format lends itself to a variety of group interaction, media and discussions. Couples will engage in decision-making exercises, labor skill rehearsals and activities to help prepare for birth. A tour of the hospital is included.

Back to Work & Pumping;
2 hours, $25
This class will help prepare breastfeeding families for Mom’s return to work. Topics include: A review of Texas state laws regarding breastfeeding and the workplace; benefits of continued breastfeeding, a review of options and scenarios that work for many mothers, increasing or decreasing milk supply to fit your schedule, a review of pumping options, milk storage and handling, problem-solving in difficulties arise. Time will be available to answer questions and address the unique concerns of participants. The class is taught by an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.

2.5 hours, $30
Gain confidence and learn to care for your baby. Practice holding, diapering, swaddling and bathing a baby (doll). Learn about safety, feeding choices and health concerns of newborns through infancy. This class is perfect for both parents and grandparents.

3 hours, $30
Breastfeeding is the best possible choice for baby and Mom. Moms and Dads will learn about the benefits of mothers’ milk, how to identify your baby’s hunger cues, how to know the baby is eating enough, possible problems and solutions, pumping and storing breast milk and suggestions for working moms.

1 hour, $50.00 for 6 classes – punchcard system
This yoga class is safe, fun and healthy for women that are enjoying an uncomplicated pregnancy and those who have already given birth. We focus on yoga poses that will help your body cope with going through the changes of pregnancy, prepare it for giving birth and getting back into shape after delivery. The class can be started in any trimester and continued through the postpartum period, although the earlier in your pregnancy you start the greater the benefits you will enjoy! The class is a mix of strengthening and stretching exercises, while we also pay attention to breathing and relaxation techniques.

Infant Safety/CPR
2 hours, $35
Based on the American Heart Association CPR for Friends and Family, this hands-on class will provide you with the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a life-saving one. We recommend taking this class prenatally and it is also a great class for parents, grandparents and other caregivers.

This infant car seat safety class is taught by a certified child passenger safety expert and is designed for expecting parents. Topics include how to take care of your baby's car seat, how to properly install your baby's safety seat in your car and how to safely secure your baby in their safety seat.

1.5 hours, $25
We have an exciting sibling class that will help little ones talk about their baby-to-be and learn all about the fascinating world of a newborn. Thru story telling and demonstration, the child will receive age appropriate instructions aimed at including them in this new journey. Children will make a stuffed animal to use in class and take home as a special gift for becoming a big brother or sister.
